throughout the 15-year-
long Venetian-Turkish war,
Poros became the base of op-
erations for the Venetian ad-
miral Morozini, who used the
island as a naval base for his
fleet. It was here that he re-
ceived the news of his nomina-
tion as the Doge of Venice.
The vital role of Poros in the
Greek War of Independence
can’t be ignored. Its inhabit-
ants took part in the operations
on land from the moment the
Revolution was declared, and
they actively participated in the
liberation struggle from April
1821. It’s worth mentioning
that in September 1828 Poros
housed one of the most crucial
meetings in Greek history.
The ambassadors of England,
France and Russia met with
Kapodistrias to discuss the bor-
ders of the New Greek State.
In 1830 the harbor of Poros
became the first naval base of
the liberated Greece. Significant
historic events take place in Po-
ros in 1831 during the strong
civil conflict between Kapodis-
trias and the Hydrians, which
resulted in the blowing up of
part of the Greek fleet anchored
at Poros bay.
natürliche Festung und bot so
Schutz vor Überfällen algerischer Pi-
raten. Ab dem Jahr 1688 und während
des fünfzehnjährigen, venezianisch-
türkischen Krieges war Poros die
Marinebasis des venezianischen Admi-
rals Morosini, der seine gesamte Flotte
dort stationiert hatte. Hier erhielt er
auch die Nachricht, dass er zum Dogen
von Venedig ernannt worden war.
Auch der bedeutenden Rolle, die Po-
ros im Kampf um die Unabhängigkeit
Griechenlands gespielt hat, ist unbed-
ingt Beachtung zu schenken. Seine Be-
wohner bereiteten sich an dem Tag, an
dem die Revolution ausgerufen wurde,
darauf vor und seit April 1821 nahmen
sie an den Schlachten auf dem Fest-
land teil. Im September 1828 wurde
Poros Schauplatz eines bedeutenden
teils der griechischen Geschichte, als
sich die Botschafter Englands, Frank-
reichs und Russlands hier mit Ioannis
Kapodistrias trafen, um das Thema der
Grenzen des neuen Griechischen Sta-
ates zu erörtern. 1830 wurde in Poros
der erste Kriegshafen des freien Griech-
enlands ins Leben gerufen.
Im Jahr 1831 kommt es zu einem
weiteren, bedeutenden geschichtlichen
